E-mail FAQ

What does POP mean?
POP (or POP3) stands for Post Office Protocol and is the standard Internet protocol for receiving e-mail. POP is what allows you to download mail from the linkLINE mail server. The server stores your mail when you are not connected to the Internet. When you open your e-mail box and send a request to get new messages, the messages are moved from our server to your computer.

How much storage space do I have on the linkLINE mail server?
You have 25 MB of storage space on our server for each linkLINE E-Mail account. This is the amount of room set aside on our mail system to hold messages sent to you, between the time our mail system gets them and the time you check for them. If you check your e-mail on a regular basis (i.e., at least once per week), then you will probably never exceed 25 MB.

Can I read my linkLINE mail through a Web page?
To check your e-mail through the Web, just click on "WebMail" on the linkLINE home page or login through the Members Area. This is a great way to access your mail when you're at work, traveling, or just away from your own computer at the moment. Checking your linkLINE e-mail through the Internet will only give you new, unread messages. The messages you have read and stored on your computer will not be viewable.

What is Spam?
Unsolicited commercial e-mail (UCE), or spam, is defined as flooding the Internet with copies of the same message, in an attempt to force the message on people who would not otherwise choose to receive it. Most 'spamming' is commercial advertising, often for dubious products, get-rich-quick schemes, and adult content. Most e-mail users consider spam to be the equivalent of junk mail.

How does a spammer get my e-mail address?
E-mail addresses are gathered from many sources, including personal home pages, newsgroups, mailing lists and chat rooms. There are also computer programs that randomly generate e-mail addresses.

How do I get off a spammer's mailing list?
Often, a spam mail will contain a "Remove" link or will ask you to Reply to the sender to be removed. This method is generally successful with legitimate businesses, but may not be the best course of action with a seasoned spammer. By following their link or replying to the message, you are validating your e-mail address as active and it will probably be added to the next list. However, you can set rules or filters in your e-mail software that can automatically delete messages that meet the criteria you define.
